At World Hijab Day, StyleEsteem founder Sonya Keshwani — fashion designer, breast cancer survivor, and women’s health advocate — took the stage to honor the cultural, historical, and personal significance of the hijab through both storytelling and couture. Held in collaboration with Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson and Bronx Fashion Week, the event brought together community, culture, and fashion in a powerful way. Sonya spoke about the hijab not only as a symbol of faith and identity, but as a global expression of dignity, self-definition, and style — themes that deeply align with her own journey through chemotherapy hair loss and rebuilding confidence through headwear. As a young breast cancer survivor and entrepreneur, she shared how fashion became a language of healing, allowing her to reclaim her voice, her image, and her sense of self.
The highlight of the event was a striking fashion show featuring one-of-a-kind couture hijabs, each handmade and designed to celebrate beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. These couture headpieces incorporated intricate details — from hand-beaded embellishments to heirloom-inspired finishes — elevating the hijab into a statement of artistry and empowerment. Through this collection, StyleEsteem continues to bridge fashion with meaning, honoring both tradition and modern expression.
