Survivor Stories: Meet Lauren Edelston, Caregiver

For cancer patients, caregivers are true superheroes. Whether it’s a family member offering unwavering love, an oncology nurse providing thoughtful care, or a coworker offering quiet support, caregivers help us feel safe, comforted, and understood. In honor of National Caregiver’s Day, we are shining a light on one incredible caregiver: Lauren Edelston.

We first met Lauren when she modeled for us at Twist Out Cancer’s Runway of Resilience fashion show, where our founder, Sonya Keshwani, serves on the board. As she graced the stage in our couture headpieces, Lauren’s warmth and strength filled the room, a moment beautifully captured by ABC 7 Chicago. We’re honored to share her story and celebrate the love, resilience, and care she brings to the cancer community.

1.  How are you connected to the cancer community?

Throughout my life, I’ve had friends and family diagnosed with various types of cancers. These individuals all fought so hard and lived through the unknown, showing bravery through both bright and dark days. I’ve unfortunately faced devastating loss while also still knowing other incredible survivors. This has shaped my life by realizing how fragile our time is. It’s important to live life to the fullest, support and love on others, get involved in organizations that make a difference, be inspiring, and love the life you are given.

2. We loved having you grace the runway for us at Twist Out Cancer’s Runway of Resilience. How has Twist Out Cancer impacted your journey?

Twist Out Cancer has gifted me the opportunity to share my story in a safe space. I’ve attended their Twist Shops, was an inspiration in their Brushes with Cancer program, and participated in their Runway of Resilience fashion show. These experiences gave me the chance to get out of my comfort zone and tap into feelings and emotions I would have otherwise hidden. Twist Out Cancer has given me so much strength and made me realize that sharing opens up a whole new layer of support and love. I’ve truly needed this in order to process, connect, and heal.

3.  Where do you draw strength and inspiration from as a cancer caregiver?

Never give up. It’s a roller coaster of hope, love, and sometimes loss. I did everything I possibly could as a loving daughter and dedicated caretaker and because of this, I was able to let go of my mother without any regrets. I drew strength and inspiration from all my loved ones and ultimately through the love my mom gave me.
